Where it all began...
Caroline Chapman, my second great-grandmother, was born on 22 October 1846 in Clarendon, South Australia. She was the third child of English immigrants James Chapman and Mary Ann Hart, who arrived on these shores around 1838.
A treasured family keepsake is a photograph of Caroline on her wedding day in 1865. At just 18, she began a new chapter with her husband, Henry Inglis, then 27. Their first daughter, Agnes, was born in April 1866, marking the beginning of a bustling family life. Caroline and Henry would go on to have 15 children, with their youngest, Gerald, arriving in 1889 when Caroline was an impressive 52 years old.
The stories passed down by my grandmother spoke of Caroline’s strength and spirit — a woman who managed the demands of raising a large family while supporting her husband through the social and economic challenges of late 19th-century South Australia. This rich tapestry of family history has ignited my deep-seated fascination and passion for genealogy
